In this article, after defining the concept of cultural reference and limiting its treatment to the study of phraseological units and intertextual references, we address these two phenomena in order to show the difficulty that users without visual or acoustic perception problems have in identifying and understanding them. Then, after presenting the current regulations designed to help disabled people in their daily lives, we show that cultural references have not been researched in depth in the field of accessibility and that support measures are necessary so that the viewer can have a reception, at least compensatory, of this phenomenon.

This study deals with animated films aimed at children and youth with a dual objective: first, from an intralinguistic point of view, to understand the use of subtitling to make Spanish produced animated films accessible to Spanish audiences with impaired hearing; second, from a interlinguistic perspective, to understand the linguistic and translatological challenges of transferring this audiovisual product to German-speaking viewers. A review of the parameters governing subtitling for the deaf shows that, in general, the normative guidelines have been followed. Moreover, the interlinguistic analysis shows that the translation into German was made using the English version of the film which may present consequences for German speakers given the cultural context of the adaptation.

Accessible tourism aims to eliminate barriers that hinder tourism for people with disabilities. However, in recent years this concept has evolved into the concept of <i>Tourism for all</i> which is not limited to the elimination of physical barriers but to ensure that tourist environments can be enjoyed by any person. From the point of view of translation, cross-linguistic and intralinguistic Easy Reading makes it possible to offer a tourist text with the required information in an understandable way. This task can be carried out based on the translator’s professional profile. Within the framework of our work, we intend to: (1) analyse the inter- and intralinguistic translation of tourist texts into Easy Reading, (2) identify the problems involved in the translation into Easy Reading of this type of text.

The accessibility of legal language has become an essential component of social integration for all citizens. Likewise, for any legal translator, understanding legal language will be a crucial first step in overcoming any communication barrier. <br />In light of this consideration, the purpose of this study is to compare the original Charter of the United Nations with the plain-language version adapted to the same language, paying particular attention to differences in phraseology. By conducting this study, we will have an opportunity to examine the linguistic simplification strategies applied by this international organization, taking into consideration the factors highlighted by plain language as a means of making legal language more communicatively accessible.

Multilingual audiovisual works include fragments in L3 — i.e. in any language different from the dominant language in the source text and the dominant language in the target text. L3 are often subtitled, even in traditionally dubbing countries. These subtitles are a barrier for visually impaired users, who will need to have them made explicit verbally through audio subtitling (AST). This chapter provides teachers and self-taught students with tools and tasks to learn about and practice this submodality of audio description. Firstly, AST is defined and its characteristics, the problems it poses and the strategies for solving them are described. Then, a didactic proposal that could be adapted to other educational settings is presented.

The importance of accessibility services in audiovisual products is irrefutable. There is an increasing need to work on accessible audiovisual content so that people with sensory disabilities can benefit from having access to culture and entertainment. Accessible audiovisual translation is accordingly one of the best methods to this end. Our objective is to teach two groups of university students to use the appropriate tools and create accessible materials, introducing them to a new professional opportunity and the new audiovisual market needs. For that, we will undertake an educational project which consists of offering a quality translation for people who are deaf or hearing impaired. The results reflect the interest and awareness of these students about people with specific needs.

Audio description (AD) must compensate for the loss of visual information through words, so the training of audio-describers is necessary and, given the importance of this service, more important than ever. For us, one of the issues that seems to be the most complex to bring into the audio description script is that of intertextuality, and audio-describers must decide the degree of their intervention to ensure that these connections reach the viewers. Thus, we have reviewed some previous studies and we have carried out an analysis proposal in the film <i>Dolor y gloria</i> (Almodóvar 2019) to observe the degree of explicitation. Finally, we have developed a series of didactic activities to work with intertextuality in audio description training.

The aim of this article is to include Subtitling for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing audiences (SDH) as a transversal competence in the teaching-learning of French-Spanish Technical-Scientific Translation, to implement a didactic proposal that will help students to consolidate and expand the competences required by this branch of the discipline. To this end, we aim to familiarise students with real working dynamics in the field of subtitling for deaf and hard-of-hearing people by using simulated collaborative translation assignments in which students act in assigned roles, and which serve to raise practical issues of the labour market in audiovisual translation and accessibility applied to the context of technical-scientific translation.
